History of the MOSH

Caltech created the position of MOSH in 1940. Many American schools have faculty “masters” who are affiliated with a particular residence hall or a college within a university. At Caltech the MOSH serves all undergraduate students regardless of residence or affiliation.

The position has always been held by a professorial faculty member with a particularly strong interest in undergraduate life and a desire to enrich the experience of students at Caltech. Recent MOSHes include Catherine Jurca (English), Steven Frautschi (Physics), David Wales (Math), Chris Brennen (Mechanical Engineering) and Sunney Chan (Chemistry).

Originally the MOSH had direct oversight of Caltech’s four undergraduate student houses, increased to seven in 1960, and finally eight in 1996. These duties were assumed by professional staff within Student Affairs in the early 1990s. Hosting events for students has always been an integral part of the position. As a member of Student Affairs, the MOSH also serves on committees and participates in decisions involving the well-being of undergraduates.
