Faculty in the Houses
Caltech has a long tradition of faculty involvement in the undergraduate Houses. Faculty members are guests at House dinners and other events, and Avery House, which opened in 1996, has three faculty in residence. Houses also have Associates—faculty and staff members affiliated with a particular house and who attend regular events there.
To foster these interactions, each House receives $500 per term to cover the cost of faculty and staff and their families who attend House dinners. For more information, contact Sue Chiarchiaro in the Office of Campus Life.
Tips for inviting faculty to events and encouraging them to return:
Faculty members know how important the unique culture of the Houses is to undergraduates and are glad to receive invitations to them. To increase the chances that a faculty member participates, it is advisable to:
- Issue invitations well in advance, at least two weeks ahead of time (three is better).
- Email, call, or write faculty members personally with the invitation (no mass emails).
- At House dinners, provide faculty guests with a student host to introduce them to other students and sit with them.
