Option Teas
Each year the MOSH hosts several “option” teas at his house in the winter and spring terms. These introduce freshmen to faculty and upper-class students in their proposed area or areas of study. Students learn about specific research opportunities and meet many of the people they will work and study with over the next few years. Freshmen should look for a directory email in early January asking them to send their option choices so that they will receive an invitation to the appropriate tea.
Freshmen and upper-class students can also register for an option tea right now by clicking here.
Student-Faculty Lunches
Students on the Academic and Research Committee (ARC) of ASCIT, with the assistance of the MOSH, organize a series of student-faculty lunches in the undergraduates houses. These take place during the fourth, seventh, and ninth weeks of each term. Announced to all undergraduates via email. If you would like to make sure a specific faculty member receives an invitation or to get more information, please contact Sue Chiarchiaro or the MOSH.
Receptions for Prominent Visitors
Each year the MOSH organizes receptions for undergraduates and faculty at her house for prominent visitors to campus, whose ranks have included Al Franken, Garrison Keillor, Ralph Nader, and Michael Creighton.
Opera, Theater, and Symphony trips
The MOSH organizes trips to various cultural institutions in Los Angeles. Tickets are free to students, and transportation is provided.
Tickets to these events are distributed by lottery. A directory email announces the event to all undergraduates a few weeks in advance with instructions on how to register. You can also register by clicking on the links below within the given time frame.
One or two faculty members usually come to the opera and theater as well as well as to a dinner with students at the MOSH house beforehand. Please contact the MOSH well in advance if you would like to propose inviting a specific faculty member on one of these outings. If the faculty member comes, so do you!
Please note that in order to maximize the number of students who participate, no student can attend more than one off-campus opera/theater/symphony/museum trip per academic year.

“Manners” Dinners
The MOSH and the Assistant Vice President Student Life, Tom Mannion, co-host 3-4 dinners a year for undergraduates who want to learn the basics of etiquette, in preparation for the post-Caltech world of business receptions and dinner parties. Instruction occurs over a superb six-course meal cooked by Tom and his student assistants. Announced to all undergraduates via directory email.
Food and Wine Pairing Courses
These events are co-hosted by the MOSH and the Assistant Vice President Student Life, Tom Mannion. The course is for seniors who are over 21 only. The group tastes several wines and discusses their properties, focusing on how to match them with appropriate foods at a dinner.
